VoIP can cut call costs 'by 92%'

Businesses have been advised that the cost of making international calls can be substantially reduced by switching to voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology.

Using a broadband internet connection, these systems send voice calls over the web for a much lower cost as it does not interface with the traditional legacy telecoms network.

Quantifying the size of the saving has not always been clear, but price comparison website uSwitch.com has suggested it can be 92 per cent cheaper to call internationally using IP telephony.

"It's clear that VoIP is a great way to save money on calling abroad," said uSwitch.com's head of communications services, Steve Weller.

"Christmas is an expensive time of year and a few pounds here and there can really mount up," he added, pointing out that the numerous cheap VoIP plans exist for calls to countries such as Australia, Germany, Ireland and the USA.

According to telecoms industry regulatory Ofcom, some 500,000 calls a year are now made from the UK using VoIP services, showing the rapid growth of this internet-based technology.
