VoIP uptake spreads across the world

The uptake of VoIP in other countries is expanding, following the success of the technology in the UK, a source reports.

It has been found uptake of the telecommunications service has reached Latin America, where 69 per cent of the lines are now IP telephony ready.

According to analysis from Frost and Sullivan, businesses in the area have begun to move away from traditional calling towards VoIP as they look to make their firms more efficient.

The region has also recently seen a reduction in the cost of IP phones and IP telephony lines, meaning small to medium businesses (SMBs) can now adopt the technology.

Estimates in the report found the market should reach $1.3 billion (£0.7 billion) by 2013, having earned revenues of $778.9 million last year.

Raphael Barone and Juan Manuel Gonzalez, analysts at Frost and Sullivan, said: "Even though large enterprises are already driving sales of IP pure, it will not be long before the SMBs account for a considerable share of the sales."

A report from Frost and Sullivan found SMBs are driving uptake of VoIP in the UK, with almost 90 per cent of the products on the market being aimed at this group.
