VoIP to reduce mobile call costs

The rising use of VoIP is leading some mobile phone providers to offer the technology, which in turn is set to reduce call costs.

According to the Times, the European Commission has ruled some firms may have to offer the service to allow people free or cheap access to calls regardless of their location.

Vivane Reding, the telecoms commissioner, told the newspaper roaming costs on the continent should be reduced and internet may be the key to this.

"Internet telephony is for many citizens the only cost-effective way to stay in touch. I would of course encourage this technology, but for the time being [the operators] seem to be a little reluctant," she said.

T-Mobile is now allowing calls to be made over the internet in a package, but charges customers a higher flat rate for the service.

According to the newspaper, so far mobile operators have been reluctant to offer the calls as they result in fewer people using the higher call charges of a conventional line.

Recently the Seiche SPD phone was released which allows VoIP calls and has the services of a usual mobile phone, BusinessWorld.com reports.
