'VoIP takeup high' among expanding businesses

VoIP is becoming increasingly popular among businesses that are moving premises, with many adopting IP telephony services as a natural choice when relocating, according to consultancy firm Analysys.

Margaret Hopkins, associate at the company, has said that it is proving particularly useful for firms that have night offices and homeworkers.

"In general, people opening new offices ... will use VoIP without a second thought," she said.

However, she added that there is currently a lack of understanding of the full benefits of VoIP systems among smaller businesses.

She cited the improved functionality and cost savings offered by VoIP deployments as some of the benefits of the technology, but added that most small businesses were unaware of these potential gains because some vendors had not made it easy to understand how VoIP can help businesses.

A study by the Bathwick Group has found that in terms of expected business communications investment expenditure, VoIP was the third highest priority behind laptops and handheld devices.
