VoIP 'should be priority in security improvements'

Although the majority of IP-based communications need security improvements VoIP should be higher on the list than others, an expert has said.

Codenomicon's chief technology officer, Ari Takanen, has said that all new technologies face challenges when making them secure.

In an article for eweek, Mr Takanen wrote: "New technology is driven by innovative but, unfortunately, inadequately-funded startups. Dedicated resources and tools for integrating security into the software-development lifecycle may not initially be available. As a result, the new technology can get a bad reputation."

He added that although he would like to think that the sudden awareness of security in VoIP is because it has only just begun selling, it is more likely that it has been born out of fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Mr Takanen also emphasised that security is a continuing process and not just something which can be added on to a network.

Codenomicon recently announced the release of new next-generation security testing software.
