VoIP networks 'require careful monitoring'

Firms considering switching their communications to VoIP telephony have been advised that these systems need close monitoring to gain the most benefit.

According to Brian Solomon, the editor of technology website TMCNet, the network carrying the IP telephony signals must be maintained carefully so that calls get through to their destination with a high level of call quality.

He also advised firms to weigh up whether their business infrastructure is in a well-prepared state for the technology to be implemented before embarking on a VoIP venture.

"Beyond considering ROI [return on investment] and other financial calculations, executives must consider the technology available," Mr Solomon said.

"They must assess their companies' tolerance levels for risk and change."

He urged companies to place the greatest emphasis on voice quality, with either the firm or a telecoms management service monitoring this factor using "standards-based measurement tools that will track, report and correct voice quality".
