VoIP making world into 'global village'

The rising use of VoIP technology is turning the world into a global village, according to a source.

People using the IP telephony service can communicate with business partners and colleagues in a "cost-effective way, regardless of their location in the world, reports ITNewsAfrica.com.

Yusef Simjee, senior systems engineer at KSS, writes on the website that businesses implementing the technology should ensure it is properly protected.

He states many connections are not secured and left open to potential attacks, meaning businesses need to gain knowledge on how to identify a threat and how to deal with it if it occurs.

Users should avoid running the programme alongside session initiation protocol as it has "little inherent security", the website reports.

Spamming, often seen in email inboxes, is another area to look out for in VoIP technology, with instant messaging systems starting to be targeted.

Jason Ostrom of VoIP Hopper has recently developed a tool called UCSniff which can detect issues in systems and map telephone extensions, reports CNET.com.
