VoIP and video 'to change comms forever'

Such has been the impact of internet-based voice calls (VoIP) and the advent of web video that the effects are expected by one analyst to be long-lasting. According to Juan Vela of US broadband service provider Ocaam Networks, VoIP and IPTV have "changed the telecommunications market like no other technologies before". Increasing numbers of firms are following this trend and adding VoIP services and video conferencing to their IT applications. And Mr Vela suggested that this will continue in the future as the technology develops. "Competitive pressure coupled with consumer demand for innovative services [will see] carriers... faced with a challenge to create and offer innovative services that leverage the technology options now available in the access equipment market," he said. With such positive predictions for the future of VoIP services, Mr Vela concluded that "it's easy to see how IPTV and VoIP are in every carrier executive's list of 'must-haves'".
