VoIP 'allows global projects'

VoIP has been used in a new initiative to follow female IT professionals around the world, it has been reported.

The Doing IT Around the World project tracked 36 women in IT jobs from Antarctica to Hawaii on August 11th to show their day-to-day role in the industry, according to Computerworld.

Covering women in careers such as data mining, web design, graphic art and microelectronics, the initiative was founded by Sonja Bernhardt, owner and chief executive officer of software development company ThoughtWare.

Ms Bernhardt revealed the project was made possible by VoIP, as the technology allowed her to easily contact the participants who are spread across the globe.

Pointing out uses other than business communications, she told the news provider: "Many people are just playing with these tools … instead of realising that you can have a global project that basically costs nothing."

Recently, Yo! Sushi revealed it will deploy an IP telephony solution across its restaurants in order to reduce costs, according to vnunet.com.
