VoIP a key element of business cost-cutting, says expert

Switching from traditional phone systems to VoIP is a key way for companies to cut costs, it has been suggested.

Malcolm Sheppard, a telecommunications specialist, explained that an increasing number of business bosses are realising the importance of saving cash amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

The GILL Technologies researcher noted, however, that many firms still do not appreciate the specific cost cuts to be made via the use of unified communications.

VoIP, he said, has been adopted "at high rates" by many businesses.

"It can be more cost-effective than owning your own private branch exchange, not only because the equipment is cheaper, but also because you can make many of your calls without ever using the public switched telephone network or paying for long distance," Mr Sheppard continued.

A further advantage of VoIP he singled out is its facilitation of phone and web conferencing - another significant source of cost savings.

In a survey of solutions providers carried out this month, it was revealed that the market for unified communications continues to grow.

The Everything Channel's 2008 State of Technology: Networking report indicated that customers are becoming increasingly interested in unified communications as a means of boosting productivity.
