'Test networks' before deploying VoIP

Network assessment is a vital step for companies that are considering using VoIP in their business communications, it has been claimed.

Robert Merrill, creative writer at Telchemy, recommends on TMCnet that firms ensure their IP infrastructure is capable of handling the increased network traffic VoIP will bring.

He advises companies to review their Ethernet switch statistics to identify any packet errors or excessive collisions it experiences and suggests improvements to the network are carried out before using the IP telephony solution.

In addition, Mr Merrill points out that some pre-deployment testing may be a good idea before the technology is implemented, the article continues.

The expert writes: "Before deploying service, use a pre-deployment tool capable of generating simulated voice traffic with the traffic patterns and volumes expected from the 'live' VoIP service."

Mr Merrill also claims this testing should be conducted on different days and at different times due to varying network conditions which may be experienced.

The American and International Info Resources blog recently advised companies considering using VoIP to find an experienced provider which has experience with other technologies such as video conferencing and direct inward dialling.
