'Quality of service assurances could lead to increased VoIP deployment'

The take-up of VoIP could escalate if quality of service is secured, it has been claimed.

Benjamin Ellis, writing on newsfactor.com, said managing the network performance of VoIP could open up "other new dimensions".

He stated: "The network has to get it right first time, every time. The management tools have to be able to detect that the network got it wrong."

VoIP depends on IP network infrastructure and can be affected by echo on the line, background noise and distorted sound if this is not properly utilised, he added.

It was recently revealed by specialist UK VoIP analyst Illume that outstanding issues in the sector are being resolved.

The organisation said issues such as a lack of VoIP handsets and signalling discrepancies have all but been eradicated, commbusiness.co.uk reported.

A vast range of handsets is now available, according to the website, while SIP appears to have become the accepted standard for signalling in the sector.
