'No more buzz' demanded by VoIP users

Business users of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are demanding a greater level of sound quality from their devices, it has emerged.

Research conducted by VoIP solutions provider Polycom has discovered many professionals would be willing to upgrade their current systems in order to eliminate interference.

In many cases, this would be a preferred option to simply eliminating the source of the interference, such as individuals' mobile phones.

Chief technical officer of the firm's voice communications solutions division Jeff Rodman comments: "Radio frequency interference is nothing new, but our awareness of it is at an all-time high."

VoIP providers are now launching conferencing products with integrated shielding to help eliminate the interference from nearby wireless-enabled devices.

"Now customers can bring their smartphones into the conference room and not cause any interference," Mr Rodman adds.

Some 70 per cent of those surveyed by Polycom expressed a desire to upgrade their systems to combat the problem, while 60 per cent said their mobile phones are indispensable even while in a meeting.

Network testing solutions provider Packet Island recently noted that the ability to detect transient problems with VoIP connections is a "key benefit" of modern testing software.
