New study reveals VoIP challenges

A new study which looks at the barriers, drivers and trends in the VoIP sector has been released.

Industry analyst Infonetics Research surveyed service providers and found 40 per cent of respondents believe they have enough capacity to handle increased international voice traffic.

Capital expenditure (capex), competition and moves to IP multimedia systems are the most prominent technical challenges to VoIP, according to the organisation.

Stephanie Teral, principal at Infonetics, commented that service providers face difficulties with capex being capped.

"There are some areas in which most carriers are increasing their capex though - growth areas tied to additional revenue, such as VoIP," she added.

Meanwhile, research by the Brookside Group has revealed companies are finding purchasing new technology is becoming more and more complex.

The organisation stated this is leading a rise in the recruitment of consultants to help firms make the right telephony choice.
