Importance of VoIP security 'needs to be realised'

Managers of IT and telecommunications companies need to understand the importance of VoIP security, it is claimed.

Ari Takanen, writing for ITworld.com, says even though they may think it is "bad news" as it "equates to the costs they would love to live without", bosses will realise security is not free.

He says in order to build a secure communication network, analysis of key threats needs to be undertaken and an understanding should be acquired of attacks such as denial of service, eavesdropping, fraud, spoofing and unauthorised.

Mr Takanen indicates companies should understand and measure risk to assess the management mechanisms and overall security framework which need to be put in place to keep the business safe.

It was revealed recently a quarter of businesses deploy VoIP despite security concerns.

US connectivity experts the Yankee Group said the other three-quarters of companies are looking to install it within the next two years even after they have been made aware of the risks of moving telephony to a data network, according to Computerweekly.com.
