IP telephone exchanges 'to benefit small businesses'

The way small and medium sized businesses manage their call systems is about to change as new digital technology allows for more flexibility, one analyst suggests.

Paul Taylor, technology correspondent at the Financial Times, today comments on the way small businesses have had difficulty communicating effectively using analogue systems in the past.

Traditional private branch exchanges (PBX) are too costly and too unwieldy to be effective for small businesses, he writes, adding that many encounter problems with the limited features of single-line telephony systems.

The solution, he argues, will come with increasingly affordable Internet Protocol (IP) PBX systems, which offer the same levels of functionality without the price tag.

"IP PBX systems are relatively inexpensive and enable even those with limited IT and networking know-how to make changes without opening up electronic equipment or touching a circuit board," he states.

His comments follow recent findings by TMCnet.com that as well as being versatile and cost effective to install, IP-based solutions can also cut monthly phone bills by around 50 per cent.
