Hi-tech businesses enjoy investment boost

A number of local development bodies are encouraging companies to use web based technologies to drive their businesses forward.

The South Yorkshire Investment Fund, an organisation backed by the European Regional Development Fund, for example, has recently awarded £500,000 to a local business that is using Internet Protocol (IP) technology to provide secure alarm-based security services.

Traditional security companies use analogue telephone lines to relay information about the security of premises, which is often seen as the weak link, reports the Yorkshire Post.

Elsewhere, the South West Regional Development Agency also states its commitment to companies utilising broadband technology to provide innovative services and products.

It states its intention to support "the conditions in which businesses can become more productive and more profitable".

The announcement follows recent reports from the Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA) that IP services will drive business innovation further still during 2008.

The ISPA predicts that video conferencing facilities and remote working technologies will be particularly lucrative areas for business in the coming year.
