Green tips for VoIP outlined

Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services have the potentially to become even more environmentally-friendly, it has been suggested.

Along with data centres, the voice call technology may be set to gain more green controls, according to Danny Bradbury, a writer for environmental publication BusinessGreen.

He highlighted the development of power management systems which allow for scheduled turn-offs of applications or systems.

This means that a firm can set a time for all such services to turn themselves off, such as after the working day is done - thus saving power.

Such measures are likely to be supported by Freeform Dynamics service director Jon Collins, who told Mr Bradbury that "the network doesn't have the best track record when it comes to green, which is ironic given that it is an area of great potential".

Mr Collins added that his disappointment in company use of VoIP and data network systems so far is heightened when "considering the efficiency gains that could be achieved if the data was in the right place at the right time".

But nevertheless, companies using VoIP are already in a position to reduce their carbon footprint by allowing employees to access it from home and therefore reducing the need for them to travel into work - emitting polluting exhaust fumes as they go.
