Firms urged to move to IP services

Companies have been advised that the industry trend is towards firms using internet-based (IP) systems, such as VoIP or remote working applications.

Christian Harris of small business computing magazine BIOS suggested that since "everything is going IP", firms should consider following the established pattern or risk being left behind by their rivals.

"Results point to a growing need for market education into the host of benefits of running a modern converged network," he wrote in a BIOS article.

"It is the industry's responsibility to assist businesses in considering all of the advantages in deploying and maintaining a highly available converged network."

A Data Integration and Extreme Networks survey highlighted by Mr Harris found that close to 60 per cent of UK businesses are now running at least one IP system, while video communications are becoming more popular.

He explained that a major driver of this trend is that it looks highly appealing from an executive viewpoint due to the promises of significant savings from an IP solution - for example, heavily reduced phone bills after introducing as VoIP service.
