Firms 'should assess convergence benefits'

Businesses should look to capitalise on the benefits of VoIP services and unified communications, an industry analyst has argued.

It is important for businesses to recognise the increased mobility, flexibility and availability VoIP can offer business clients, argues Gene Reynolds in Bios magazine.

However, he says that the most successful business deployments for such services will need a prior assessment of the tailored requirements of individual firms.

"It is easy to see why VoIP has become the panacea for communications issues," Mr Reynolds asserts, adding that it is important to ensure that systems are "suited to the environment to which they have been deployed".

Individual business needs should dictate how companies approach a unified communications implementation, he states.

His comments follow recent assertions from analyst Rich Tehrani that 2008 will be the year that a large number of businesses adopt such services.

Ultimately, Mr Reynolds argues, it is advisable to seek expert guidance in planning and implementing VoIP services and unified communications systems.
