Firms 'need to secure VoIP'

US-based businesses need to do more to secure their VoIP systems, a new study suggests.

The report by analyst In-Stat entitled US Businesses Lag in Securing VoIP, notes that with many businesses choosing IP telephony services, it is important that firms ensure systems are secure.

Maintaining network integrity will become increasingly important in the future as firms extend their business communications beyond the local network, the company predicts.

The study finds that over 80 per cent of businesses had adopted some form of VoIP deployment, with 168 million IP systems forecasted to be installed by 2010.

Measures to secure VoIP systems noted by the firm included "periodic security audits and pre-deployment assessments", with the company predicting that until such practices are in place, many businesses will fail to benefit fully from the cost benefits of IP telephony services.

The firm has also announced in a recent report that on a global scale IP telephony has crossed from an emerging technology to a mainstream choice for business communications.
