Broadband investment needed for VoIP expansion

Ensuring investment into the broadband infrastructure in Britain is vital in ensuring multimedia applications such as VoIP can expand their client base, according to an industry expert.

Philip Rosedale, founder of the online community Second Life, has said that fibre optic networks will need to be introduced in the UK if applications which need high bandwidth are to keep growing.

Ofcom has recently launched a consultation which will be looking into the options of delivering improvements to broadband for consumers.

The regulator will be considering existing infrastructure such as underground pipes and sewers as possible ways to accelerate the transition to fibre optic networks.

Mr Rosedale also said that websites such as YouTube will rely on more investment into UK broadband in order to keep expanding.

In other news, it has been claimed by an internet blogger that the internet has played a vital role in the growth of VoIP services.
