Small firms 'drive VoIP growth'

A new study claims that adoption of VoIP by smaller companies will be key to the technology's spread.

The report, from Research and Markets, points out the small office/home office and small business sectors are the main targets of the uptake of IP telephony.

However, the study claims the migration to VoIP will be a gradual switch away from older systems.

The firm explains: "As an increasing number of enterprises investigate VoIP to combat rising telecommunications costs, migration to IP telephony will not be a wholesale swap of current PBX installations."

In addition, the findings suggest smaller firms will expect enterprise-class services from their providers, such as meaningful service level agreements and professional installations.

Research and Markets also claims that many of the companies adopting VoIP are not technically minded, although they begin to use the advanced features of the business communication solution after implementing the system.

Earlier this year, a poll by BT found 48 per cent of organisations quizzed have already introduced IP telephony into their organisation.
