2009 slowdown for IT predicted

The IT market is set to slow down over the next year, although sectors such as IP telephony may be immune, according to new research.

Analyst IDC claims that the European, Middle East, and African IT markets will see growth fall to three per cent through 2009, due to the effects of the current economic climate.

However, Marcel Warmerdam, research director of European IT markets at the firm, commented: "We are likely to see a major shift in the type of IT spending as users increasingly focus on cost reduction and gaining efficiencies."

The research suggested some "silver linings" could be found in the forecast, with IP telephones and smart handheld devices expected to experience double-digit growth rates.

In addition, areas such as outsourcing, green IT and virtualisation could see increased investment from businesses.

Yesterday (November 13th), the Global Outsourcing and Offshoring Trends for 2009 report from Equaterra claimed more companies will use IT outsourcing as the financial crisis and global recession continues.
