Almost half of firms 'use VoIP'

Research has claimed almost half of businesses have deployed IP telephony as part of their business communications strategy.

According to the study from BT, 48 per cent of organisations quizzed reported they have a functioning VoIP network, compared to 31 per cent in 2007.

Furthermore, 20 per cent of firms said they are in the process of adopting the technology and 71 per cent claimed their VoIP plans will be completed within the next two years.

Rick Blum, director of strategic marketing at the firm, commented: "[VoIP] has finally moved from an emerging to a mainstream technology in most large enterprises."

The survey also discovered 51 per cent of organisations intend to increase their spending on the technology this year, with over two-thirds planning to do so in 2009.

In addition, it found increased network flexibility, simplified infrastructure and extra collaboration were the main objectives for the deployment of VoIP.

Last month, industryblog.businessindustry1.com claimed IP telephony offers a long-term investment for businesses, with it recommending they employ a specialised provider to deploy their network.
