VoIP to take over from mobile phones

VoIP technology will soon take over the mobile phone industry, according to one expert.

The technology is set to challenge the "safe haven" in which mobiles lie, especially for customer support, Daniel Berninger from Giga Omni Media said.

Mr Berninger said VoIP devices now account for 20 per cent of landline traffic, but this will not continue, with other methods being chosen.

He predicted the current system of charging for off-net calls will no longer become available as VoIP use becomes more widespread.

Mr Berninger said firms which use VoIP technology still based on telephone networks lose the high-quality audio offered by IP-based calls.

The factor of reliability is the main advantage traditional telephony systems are still perceived to have over VoIP technology, which may soon be combated.

An expert recently advocated VoIP services, saying cost cuts can be seen in the technology's adoption, which many bosses are realising in the economic uncertainty.
