VoIP is utilised on a 'wide range of networks'

The rising popularity of VoIP telephony is seeing it being implemented on networks which use a number of different technologies and "revolutionizing" the way people communicate, it has emerged.

According to a new report by industry insight provider Research and Markets, VoIP is often utilised within "heterogenous" networks, which use a range of physical equipment and protocols.

The report, Wireless, P2P and New Enterprise Voice over IP, notes that VoIP's popularity has "exploded" in recent years and notes that the system could be the technology that takes the current Public Switched Telephone Network System in to the next generation.

It adds that the benefits of VoIP are not confined to the business world and could have an impact on how people communicate on a day-to-day basis.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that VoIP services are becoming increasingly popular as a result of technological advances within the system.

Technology blogger Kristenkiya asserted that subscription rates to the service are on the up, as people see it as more "mainstream".
