Younger workers 'demanding convergence'

Younger employees are increasingly driving the growth of the unified communications market as they demand converged methods of conducting business in and out of the office.

This is the suggestion of Laurent Kocher, chief executive of Orange Business Services, who says that people who are used to using consumer instant messaging services are increasingly coming to expect the same sort of business presence functionality in the workplace.

Presence services allow workers to see the real-time status of individual employees in order to contact them via the most appropriate means.

"Chief information officers are asked to implement this in order to retain staff," Mr Kocher tells ZDNet Asia.

He continues by commenting that as people spend less time in direct contact with work colleagues - because of remote working habits for example - maintaining effective business communications becomes evermore vital.

The benefits of presence functionality have also recently been identified in Computer World magazine, with Dennis Schmidt, senior vice-president for the Bank of America, stating that a recent converged deployment has reduced the bank's communications costs by 15 per cent on average.
