Virtual office 'increasingly a reality'

Increasing numbers of businesses are making the virtual office a reality as the demands on 21st Century commerce require an increasingly flexible workforce.

So claims labnol.org, which has identified a growing trend for diversification in the means by which co-workers communicate.

Online tools such as email and calendar functions available over the internet are paired with instant messaging applications and online file storage, providing unified communications access to a host of useful information to multiple users.

Meanwhile, developments in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies are allowing firms to conduct low-cost conference calls with large numbers of participants, without a proliferation of lines of contact.

"While members of a virtual team do not meet face to face very often, they do frequently interact online for discussions, brain-storming and training sessions to ensure that everyone is on the same page," the site explains.

Recently, Patton Electronics stated that companies were becoming increasingly demanding regarding their business communications needs, for example expecting high levels of reliability and security.
