Videoconferencing transformed by UC

Unified communications (UC) is transforming videoconferencing's reputation as a niche technology only for use in the conference room, research suggests.

A study by analysis firm Frost & Sullivan has found UC is helping conferencing evolve to include data, collaboration, instant and unified messaging and VoIP.

The videoconferencing infrastructure market has also been boosted by the introduction of high definition (HD) technology in videoconferencing endpoints.

Krithi Rao, industry analyst at Frost & Sullivan, said videoconferencing bridges, necessary for connecting endpoints had experienced a surge in sales.

He added: "Further, the market saw a surge in adoption with many vendors introducing bridges that can optimally and economically support both standard definition and HD endpoints on the same bridge."

Meanwhile, endpoint authentication technologies have been surpassed by network quality of service monitoring solutions at the top of the Network Security and Software Technology Heat Index.

Networking decision makers are believed to have been influenced to change their emphasis to the network performance experience of users by the increasing rollout of VoIP services in businesses.
