'Upgrades give return on investment'

Upgrading IT and telecommunications can result in greater productivity and staff satisfaction, according to an organisation.

Engine, a London-based design, communications and marketing group, has put in place a flexible infrastructure which is already seeing returns on the investment, the Financial Times reports.

Staff are running VoIP phones with unified messaging, Wi-Fi covers the whole company and workers can scan archives from anywhere in the world using a PDA.

According to Sadaya Chalisey, head of IT at Engine, "every type of skill and every type of resource" made the move possible.

He told the website: "Don't assume you have the skills: for cables, make sure you have a cable engineer, for servers, a server engineer. Exaggerate your resources."

Engine's move follows the recent adoption of unified communications by one of the UK's largest colleges.

Public Technology reported Leicester College is to establish a VoIP network and Wi-Fi facility and converge its voice network over three separate campuses.
