Unified communications 'reduce maintenance costs'
 
The benefits of a unified communications have been highlighted by Microsoft.

Microsoft chief information officer Tony Scott revealed that the software giant has recently deployed the solution in an attempt to cut costs and has seen a $5 million (£3.16 million) saving each year in reduced maintenance expenses.

He explained: "Combining phone and e-mail communications also increases productivity and decreases the administrative workload for our IT professionals."

Mr Scott also claimed the current economic climate is encouraging firms to look at technologies such as unified communications, which allow more collaboration to take place.

Businesses will also find benefits in being able to use integrated corporate messaging, calendaring and directories to replace their traditional phone and voice mail systems will result in a more streamlined solution.

Mr Scott also said firms should continue to invest in technology in the current economic climate, due the innovation and competitiveness is encourages.

Recently, Carl Potter, research director at Bloor Research, wrote on IT-Director.com that firms can achieve a variety of goals when the use unified communications.
