Unified communications landscape 'is shifting'

Major changes are underway in the unified communications industry, it has been claimed.

Scott Whittle, vice-president of product management at Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) equipment provider Patton Electronics, explains that businesses are becoming more demanding.

As a result, he argues, companies are looking to minimise costs while maximising the availability of communications services.

"The communications landscape is shifting again, demanding low-cost, always-available solutions that put business first," he comments.

John Wu, VoIP product line manager at the firm, adds that "businesses require complete solutions that are reliable and secure".

Meanwhile, network security solutions supplier WatchGuard Technologies recently asserted the importance of protecting VoIP connections.

By implementing modern solutions to such problems, vice-president of marketing Eric Aarrestad suggested, many firms can overcome the "new challenges" posed by technologies which use the company network for novel purposes such as communication.

An increase in the number of remote offices and branches has led to such a need for innovative products in place of the traditional network security solutions previously available, he stated.
