Unified communications 'could become software-based'

The next generation of unified communications could involve software which users download directly onto their servers, it has been claimed.

Writing on Newsfactor.com, Bob Johnson said the technology could lessen the burden on system administrators, as the end-users could oversee its operation with the minimum of training.

He also suggests the new approach will feature all the elements of unified communications, such as presence, collaboration, conferencing and instant messaging.

Mr Johnson writes: "[Unified communications] can help organisations provide faster and more flexible access to people and information, while offering the potential to reduce business travel expenses."

In addition, he claims the solution will deliver minimal impact on bandwidth and allow a straightforward administration policy to be established.

Earlier this week, research commissioned by Dimension Data claimed cost savings are the main reason for businesses implementing unified communications.
