Unified comms 'provide flexibility'

Unified communications can offer businesses the flexibility required to drive productivity in an increasingly mobile working environment, it has been argued.

TMCnet reports that while many companies admit that effective communications can suffer when employees are out of the office unexpectedly, few have been able to count the true costs of lack of availability.

However, being out of the office is no longer an automatic barrier to maintaining efficient business communications, the publication notes.

For smaller firms, this is said to be increasingly important, with unified communications allowing such businesses to level the playing field with larger corporations.

"Advanced solutions like unified communications let small firms collaborate and communicate in ways that let them compete effectively against bigger firms," comments Ray Boggs, vice-president of small and medium business and home office research at IDC.

Elsewhere, US-based firm Dimension Data has suggested that unified communications will be a top priority on boardroom agendas in 2008 and beyond.
