Unified comms 'could a take a generation to be adopted'

The full benefits of unified communications could take up to a generation for businesses to realise, it has been claimed.

According to research from In-Stat, the field of unified communications encompasses so many elements such as instant messaging or web-based conferencing that it can appear as though the majority of firms are adopting the whole solution.

However, the firm points out that the full role-out of the communication technology will take place over the long-term, with David Lemelin, In-Stat analyst, saying "real transformational changes" could take a generation to manifest.

Mr Lemelin added: "It's possible that a new generation, dubbed 'Millennials', bringing to the workplace communications habits formed in their early years portends more rapid adoption."

In the Unified Communications: A Clash of Titans report, the firm predicts the market for the solution could be worth $18 billion (£9.78 billion) by 2012.

Last week, TechWorld reported that experts at the Interop New York 2008 conference claimed businesses increasingly want their networks to be capable of handing unified communications.
