Unified comms 'can protect against disasters'

Unified communications systems can help companies protect assets in various disaster scenarios, it has been claimed.

Industry analyst Eric Eckman has suggested that the rise in IP communications technology is allowing businesses to maintain operational efficiency in times of crisis.

He asserts that increasingly, firms can use virtual network solutions to maintain business communications if premises are hit by storms or other natural disasters.

"With VoIP deployed, it is convenient and easy to work in a 'virtual office' anywhere there is an internet connection," he states.

This allows businesses to minimise downtime and continue commercial operations during disaster recovery. He also asserts that unified communications can allow workers to exchange files and manage data remotely as efficiently as in a real office environment.

Security analyst Carl Wright has claimed in the WebSphere journal that disaster recovery is becoming increasingly important for businesses, as a growing reliance on communications means that downtime now costs a lot more than it used to.
