Unified comms can cut carbon footprint

A firm adopting unified communications can reduce its carbon footprint in addition to saving on the bill.

Research from Business Management found VoIP systems which are used across a number of different sites of a business can mean a 38 per cent reduction in power usage.

This information, coupled with findings from Sun Microsystems that half of the IT budget could soon be spent on energy costs, means the system could be cost cutting.

A firm's carbon footprint can be reduced as the system has fewer moving parts so uses less energy than some other platforms, with the servers also being smaller than other systems.

In addition, the unified communication solutions enables people to work from home more often, meaning the carbon emissions created in a commute can be eliminated.

Dave Paulding, regional sales director for UK and Africa for Interactive Intelligence, states: "By implementing desk-share schemes, enterprises with a sales focus can operate with up to 70 per cent fewer workstations."

Recent research from Instat found it could take a generation for unified communications to be fully adopted.
