Unified Comms to 'improve public services'

A unified communications business model is helping Bolton council transform the way it provides services to its constituents, according to an industry analyst.

Writing in ITAdviser, Mario Devargas explains how the council has adopted converged communications to handle all aspects of its work.

The gains made represent a "culture change" in the way the council delivers its services, Mr Devargas states.

As with many businesses, Bolton council has witnessed the benefits of adopting a unified communications strategy, with mobile communications, team conferencing and presence cited as top advantages of the technology.

Mr Devargas argues that converged communications allow the council to target "business pain points", which include the length of time users wait for information and the level of inefficiency in team collaboration.

A recent case study has also praised the benefits of internet-based technologies in enabling firms to enhance their communications.

The report by Computing magazine found that IP technologies allowed businesses to adopt "resilience, flexibility, security and stability" in their communications strategies.
