Outsourcing projects 'should keep key skills in-house'

While firms could benefit from moving their IT systems to an outsourced provider, they have been advised that some employees with technical knowledge and skill should be retained in-house.

According to a new study commissioned by IT services firm LogicaCMG, having in-house teams who remain competent in dealing with IT systems is of key importance to the success of the outsourcing plan.

Leslie Willcocks, professor of technology, work and globalisation at the London School of Economics and the author of the study, said that companies should make sure they retain some control over their outsourcing projects to avoid receiving a poor level of service.

Failing to invest in the in-house IT team can also lead to higher than average contract costs, Mr Willcocks suggested.

"Organisations must spend to save now, by investing in the right internal skills to develop long term strategic benefit," he said.

"We have found a link between the lack of investment in core in-house capabilities and the disconnect it creates between the outsourced function and the retained portion of the enterprise."
