Networks 'should be unified communications ready'

Experts have suggested that firms looking to deploy unified communications and telepresence should consider the networks' capabilities, it has been reported.

According to TechWorld, specialists told the Interop New York 2008 conference that the current data networks may not be adequate foundations of real-time applications such as VoIP or unified communications.

The news provider revealed that delegates at the event called for improvements in hardware and software so networks are able to cope with the new forms of traffic.

Manfred Arndt, distinguished technologist and research and development convergence architect for HP ProCurve, said customers already want networks to be unified communications ready.

In addition, John Bartlett, principal of consultancy NetForecast, told a conference session: "We're at a tipping point for video where enterprises are seeing it as a critical new tool that they can use. Part of it is the network finally being ready to support these applications."

Research from IT advisor Analysys Mason last week said firms which deploy unified communications could see productivity improvements in younger employees as they are familiar with the emerging technology.
