IT managers 'have growing responsibility'

An industry analyst has asserted that IT management is playing an increasingly complex role in business communications. Linda Moore reports in online news resource Computing that the job now entails far more than "just pinging routers and checking for device availability.". She states that the dramatic growth in the industry as a whole has led to increasingly complex networks and communications systems, with many competing technologies delivering distributed services. An IT professional's job these days is not just to ensure that the network stays online, but "to ensure secure, reliable service delivery across large distributed systems". The result, she states, is a growing need for network management solutions that can develop with an expanding business communications system. The news follows a recent warning from analyst Deloitte that IT firms risk "catastrophic data losses" if networks are not properly secured and organised.
