Generation Y 'works well with unified communications'

Unified communications are one technology companies can introduce to lower their costs while boosting productivity, it has been claimed.

Workers from the so-called Generation Y could find that unified communications make the most of their abilities, due to their comfort with emerging technologies, IT advisor Analysys Mason suggested.

George Robertson, senior consultant at the firm, told the Together unified communications conference in Dublin that Generation Y, or those born between 1982 and 1994, tend to work in a different manner to their older colleagues.

Mr Robertson explained: "They are used to instant information, connectivity, mobility and multi-tasking. They also prefer interdependence over independence. In other words, they often need to collaborate with colleagues instead of working independently."

He also revealed that recent research backs up the view that businesses are increasingly adopting unified communications solutions, claiming that productivity has been the main driver of this.

Recent research from analyst Gartner predicted that telecommunications will continue to grow in coming years, with data network solutions expected to be the main growth area after 2012.
