Firms 'wary of IM security'

Security concerns could be discouraging companies from using instant messaging (IM) in their business communications, it has been suggested.

With the increase in unified communications, Mickael Remond, chief executive officer of ProcessOne, said companies are adopting the technology to allow their workers to share information, in addition to giving staff greater visibility on their data networks.

However, he explained: "Businesses can be afraid of the security implications … we actually did some research on this.

"A lot of companies are concerned about the use of IM in a way, particularly the public ones like MSN and Yahoo."

Mr Remond then revealed that some IM applications have an archive function, which allows a record of all the information passed over them to be retained.

Research from Vanson Bourne also claimed that business can be wary of adopting IM on their network solutions.

The firm's 2008 Enterprise IT Decision Makers Survey found 40 per cent of financial services reported they are worried about losing sensitive information through the technology, while 25 per cent retail, distribution or transport services maintain an audit trail of messages sent by employees using public applications.
