Cost savings 'are main unified communications driver'

Business owners' main reason for the deployment of unified communications is the cost savings it can achieve, it has been claimed.

According to research carried out by researcher Vanson Bourne for Dimension Data, reductions in business communications costs are the most often cited reason for implementing the technology, followed by greater efficiency and reduced travels costs.

However, the research discovered that although the environmentally-friendly aspects of unified communications are ranked tenth on the list of why companies use the solution, they can still act as a driver for uptake.

Rob Stanley of the firm pointed out that regardless of the intent for using the technology, its use still results in a greener approach to business.

He commented: "It's a virtuous circle with [unified communications]. Reducing travel by providing flexible or remote-working leads to less environmental impact."

Previous research by Vanson Bourne found 70 per cent of companies have attempted to reduce their carbon footprint, with many introducing remote working to reduce the amount of travel undertaken by employees.
