'Core network backbone' is key to IP services

Firms planning to switch their communications systems to Internet Protocol (IP) services need to ensure there is a stable network backbone to support the migration, an industry analyst asserts.

Nigel Jones, spokesperson for Alcatel-Lucent, has told Comms Business that preparatory measures must be taken to assure that the most cost-effective system is adopted.

He advises firms to identify which parts of their business will require the most from IP services and prioritise the network around those departments.

He also asserts that companies should look to install a unified communications system that is tailored to business needs, adding that "establishing a new core IP system at the hub is usually the most logical place to start".

Once a central IP system is in place, businesses can create a network that allows them to expand their communications systems, while maintaining that old architecture is supported, he states.

His comments follow a recent report from US-based research firm Light Reading stating that the most effective unified communications systems will complement existing business architecture by integrating older technologies as well as introducing new ones.
