Businesses urged to focus on "agility"

Utilising unified communications should be done to improve "business agility" rather than reduce costs, according to a research firm.

Gartner reports there are distinct differences between the expectations businesses have of unified communications and its actual capabilities.

A survey by the company revealed organisations that have implemented such systems noted employee collaboration and productivity were among the top benefits, while lower total cost of ownership was rarely cited.

Commenting on the findings, Steve Blood, research vice president at Gartner, said: "We recommend that organisations build a business case based on enabling mobility and agility rather than on reducing IT department costs."

According to the expert, unified communications is likely to help businesses reduce "human latency within a process that improves business’s ability to respond and to be agile".

Gartner, which claims to have 60,000 clients, was founded in 1979 and is based in Stamford, Connecticut in the US.
