Unified communications 'boosts security'

Using unified communications could provide contact centres with a way to increase their security, it has been claimed.

Writing on CCF Online, regional sales manager for UK and Africa at Interactive Intelligence Dave Paulding said issues such as information leaks have seen data security become an important concern for contact centres in recent years.

He pointed out that one possible breach in an IT system could come from the number of open ports, which can be exploited by hackers.

Mr Paulding added: "Unified communications solutions require fewer ports to be open and security is further increased by the fact that most systems are based on proprietary protocols which use [internet protocol]."

The expert wrote on the website that this means hackers will find it more difficult to access any information which is being used by the contact centres.

Furthermore, he suggested users select a unified communications system that has pre-integrated applications on a single software platform, in order to limit the number of potential breaches.

Last week, the Associated Press claimed contact centres are lowering their costs by allowing remote workers to use IP telephony while at home.
