Wales launches high-speed network

A new high-speed network has gone live in Wales to ensure businesses are able to adopt technologies such as unified communications.

Fibrespeed, operator of the network, has used a £30 million investment from the Welsh Assembly Government, the European Regional Development Fund and Geo Networks to gives companies in north Wales access to high-speed broadband services.

Mike Johnston, project director at the firm, said the speed with which service providers have come on board the project shows the demand for business communication services in the region.

He commented: "Businesses in the region are crying out for services such as high-speed data or unified communications."

The new network uses high-capacity optical fibre infrastructure to support wavelength-division multiplexing and Ethernet technologies, with users to benefit from speeds of up to one gigabyte per second.

Recent research from BT found that 22 per cent of businesses have some parts of a unified communications system in place, while six per cent have adopted a comprehensive solution.
