Users 'inadequately using unified communications security features'

Improper or incomplete use of security features by business users are increasing the chances of hackers breaching the systems, according to a new report.

Unified Communications: A Sense of Insecurity by Light Reading's subscription service VoIP Service Insider reveals end users are the most "glaring point of vulnerability".

Denise Culver, a research analyst at the organisation, says unified communications services run by service providers are generally less prone to attack as their security measures are more likely to be deployed properly.

She claims "simple measures" such as encryption are not being adequately utilised by customers even though their platforms enable this protection.

Ms Culver continues: "[This leaves] vendors to wonder what kind of disaster must occur before enterprises realise the need for implementing the security measures on their UC platforms."

A recent survey by analyst Psytechnics claimed businesses need to employ more multi-skilled workers for their uptake of VoIP and unified communications to be effective.

ComputerWeekly reported the benefits of unified communications cannot be properly realised unless staff are trained in the technology.
